Chapter Eight
I looked at him blankly. I had to have misheard. âSay that again.â
âIâll deliver the baby.â Drakein cocked his head. âAre you okay? You look a little pale.â
The blood rushed from my head, and I felt faint. I mustâve looked as bad as I felt because Drakein swore and sat up, patting my cheeks. âHudson, whatâs wrong? Are you in pain?â
âWhatâs wrong?â I screeched at him as he winced at the sound. âYou are not a doctor! You are going to be there holding my hand but not delivering the baby!â
Drakeinâs brow wrinkled. âIâm fully trained.â
âCan you give me an epidural?â I nearly shouted at him when he shook his head. âThen you are not trained and not delivering this baby!â
Drakein paled now as he seemed to understand my panic. âHudson, you canât have human medicine while you carry a Basilisk. You have to have a natural birth.â
âAre you fucking kidding me? Iâm a human man thatâs pregnant.â I looked at him as if he was crazy. âI buy my chemically made, polyester clothes from Walmart. I buy frozen dinners to nuke. Drakein, I live to eat Twinkies and I already know what color Iâll be dying my hair when I start to grey up. I donât do natural!â
Now he watched me as if I was a bomb and he probably was close to being right about that. In a careful voice he tried to calm me down. âYou want our son to be healthy and safe, right?â
I nodded as I started to rub my belly, nearly smiling when I felt a little kick to my hands. âYes, of course I do.â
âOkay, then you canât take something that would harm our son, right?â
I felt the trap closing on me, but I still nodded my head. My eyes widened as I heard a lock clicking shut in my head and I swallowed nervously, admitting, âDrakein, Iâm the biggest wuss there is when it comes to pain. I stub a toe and I act like my leg just broke off.â
Drakein started rubbing my belly too. âI canât mesmerize you because weâre mates, but what if I have Brekken attend the birth too? He might be able to do enough to help dull the pain.â Drakein considered his suggestion, nodding as if something else was occurring to him. âI think that would be for the best anyway. If he is here, then one of us can focus on you while the other takes care of the delivery.â
I bit my lip. âHeâs trained too?â
âYes. Most of us are because we know that we canât depend on outside help being around. But Brekken is bringing supplies tomorrow so I can ask him to come stay with us.â Drakeinâs hand stroked over my cheek. âI know you have good reason not to trust him when youâll be so vulnerable but he has saved my life several times. Until you, he was one of the only two people I trusted to have my back.â
While I had
